Hadi murder probe report to be submitted within 10 days: Home Adviser
The investigation report into the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, will be submitted within the next 10 days, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said.
He made the statement on Sunday, December 28, after a core committee meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The adviser said the interim government, led by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, is determined to ensure justice for the killing of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a frontline activist of the July mass uprising. He said police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and other intelligence agencies are working in a coordinated and intensive manner to uncover the truth behind the murder.
He said significant progress has been made in the investigation, but all details cannot be disclosed at this stage in the interest of identifying the real perpetrators and their backers.
So far, 11 people have been arrested in connection with the case. Those arrested include the father of prime accused Faisal Karim Masud, Humayun Kabir, his mother Hasi Begum, wife Shaheda Parvin Samia, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu, girlfriend Maria Akter Lima, Md Kabir, Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Ujjal, Sibion Dio, Sanjoy Chisim, Md Aminul Islam Raju and Md Abdul Hannan. Of them, six have given confessional statements under Section 164, while four witnesses have also recorded statements under the same provision.
The adviser said major seized evidence includes two foreign pistols used in the killing, 52 rounds of ammunition, magazines and knives, the motorcycle used in the crime with fake number plates, bullet shells and bullets recovered from the scene, CCTV footage and other materials, as well as signed cheques worth Tk 2.18 billion from around 53 accounts.
He said the investigation is now at its final stage and expressed hope that the charge sheet can be submitted within the next 10 days, by January 7, 2026. He urged everyone to remain patient, assuring that the full list of those involved, with names and addresses, will be made public soon.
He added that the case has already been decided to be transferred to a speedy trial tribunal and that the government is making its highest effort to ensure swift justice.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury warned that allies of fascists, criminals and terrorists are trying to obstruct the process and urged the public not to take any action that could strengthen such forces or hinder the trial.
He also called on political parties to remain vigilant against fascist collaborators and criminals infiltrating their ranks, saying law enforcement agencies are ready to assist if needed to maintain law and order.
Referring to another incident in Mymensingh, he said RAB has arrested seven people over the lynching and burning to death of garment worker Dipu Chandra Das over allegations of derogatory remarks about religion and the Prophet Muhammad. He added that the Mymensingh district police have also arrested 11 people in separate operations related to the case.
