Harassment reported at Dhanmondi 32 on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s death anniversary
On August 15, several individuals who came to pay respects at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house on Dhanmondi Road No. 32 faced harassment. Two people were reportedly beaten, but no arrests have been made.
Between 9.00am and 10.00am, police blocked both ends of the road with barricades, allowing only media personnel to enter. Leaders and activists from various parties, including Chhatra Dal, gathered near the site, delivering speeches and maintaining a strong presence.
A couple who arrived with their three children from Pirojpur were confronted and removed by police. The husband, Waliullah, runs a shoe business in Dhaka and expressed his intention to honour Sheikh Mujib, while his wife said he suffers from mental illness.
Two other visitors were also harassed and physically assaulted by local party activists but were later separated and escorted away by police. Around 10.00am, a woman named Halima, an Awami League member from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, was similarly harassed and sent away.
Gulshan Chhatra Dal activist Tanjib stated their presence alongside police was to maintain peace and prevent any disturbances caused by Awami League supporters.
No official police statement has been released, but officers on duty confirmed no arrests had been made during the morning.
This year marks the 50th death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Traditionally observed as a day of mourning, the Awami League’s activities related to the event are currently banned.
