HC asks to submit report on security measures for courts

The High Court has directed the Supreme Court registrar general to form a committee to assess security measures taken for the judges and their families at courts and residences across the country.

The court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why their failure and inaction in providing adequate security should to the judges should not be declared illegal.

The HC also asked to submit a report in this regard in 90 days.

The HC bench of Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi and Justice Raziuddin Ahmed issued the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Md Mehedi Hasan of Thakurgaon. He sought necessary directives in the wake of the murder of a judge's son in Rajshahi.

Tawshif Rahman Sumon, son of Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman, was stabbed to death at their residence on November 13. The judge's wife, Tasmin Nahar, was critically injured in the attack.

On November 16, Mehedi Hasan filed the petition as a public interest litigation through lawyer Omar Faruk, seeking HC directives for the government to ensure proper security for all lower court judges and their family members across the country.

Advocate Omar Faruk appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Md Mehedi Hasan represented the state during today's hearing.
