HC grants bail to former DU hall VP Emi in 7 March speech case
The High Court (HC) has granted bail to Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, former vice-president of Shamsunnahar Hall Students’ Union of Dhaka University, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the playback of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic 7 March speech.
A bench comprising Justices K M Zahid Sarwar and Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Thursday (April 30).
The case stems from a March 7 incident this year, when a group, including Emi, held a programme near Shahbagh Police Station in which the 7 March speech was played through a loudspeaker mounted on a rickshaw around 9:30pm.
According to case details, the event was later disrupted when a group of Dhaka University students, including AB Zubayer and Mosaddek Ali Ibn Mohammad, along with members of the Nationalist Student Movement, intervened and obstructed the programme.
Subsequently, Emi and two others were taken into Shahbagh Police Station. A case has been filed by police in connection with the incident.
Police later showed them arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sent them to jail the following day.
