HC issues contempt rule against CEC
The High Court on Sunday (January 25) issued a rule asking Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for alleged contempt of court over non-compliance with a judicial order.
The rule was issued by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hasan.
The court also directed the CEC to submit his response within four weeks.
During the hearing, Advocate Yunus Ali Akand represented the petitioner. He told the court that on August 27 last year, the High Court had directed the Chief Election Commissioner to dispose of an application related to the registration of a political party. However, the order has yet to be implemented.
Following the continued non-compliance, a contempt petition was filed against the CEC, the lawyer said.
Earlier, Advocate Yunus Ali Akand had applied to the Chief Election Commissioner seeking registration of a political party named Krishak Sramik Janata Party. As no decision was taken on the application for a prolonged period, he moved the High Court seeking judicial intervention.
