HC orders filling of nationwide abandoned deep tube wells within 3 months
High Court has directed authorities to fill all unsafe and abandoned deep tube wells across the country within three months to prevent further accidents.
A bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar passed the order on Monday (February 23) after hearing a public interest litigation (PIL).
The court also instructed the Local Government Secretary and other concerned authorities to implement the directive immediately and submit a compliance report within the stipulated timeframe.
Advocate Mohammad Monir Uddin, who moved the petition, said the writ was filed in response to repeated incidents of children falling into abandoned tube wells in different parts of the country.
He referred to several tragic cases, including the death of child Jihad in 2014 after falling into an abandoned deep tube well at Shahjahanpur Railway Colony, the death of Sajid in Tanore of Rajshahi, in December 2025, and most recently, the death of child Misbah in Raozan of Chattogram, on January 28 this year.
The court observed that such preventable incidents warrant urgent preventive measures and ordered authorities to ensure that all abandoned deep tube wells are properly sealed or filled to avert further loss of life.
