HC orders to list GI products of Bangladesh

The High Court has directed the government officials to list the Geographical Identification (GI) products of Bangladesh.

Given the discussion on Tangail saree, the concerned ministry of the government has been ordered to make this list by March 19. A double bench of Justice Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Sardar Mohammad Rashed Jahangir passed the order after the hearing of a writ petition on Monday (Feb 19).

A new discussion has started on the GI products of Bangladesh after Tangail saree was recognized as a GI product of India.

In the last few years, a total of 21 Bangladeshi products have been registered as GI and a total of 14 products have been newly applied for. Besides, two other products are in the application process.

Applying for a product does not mean that it is or will be eligible for GI certification. After various tests, it is determined which products will make it to this list. After verification, if any of them get GI certificate, then they will be known in the world as Bangladesh's own products.
