HC postpones DUCSU elections until Oct 30
The High Court has postponed the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, originally scheduled for September 9, until October 30.
A bench of Justice Habibul Gani and Justice SK Tahsin Ali passed the order on Monday (September 1) after hearing a writ petition challenging the validity of candidacies.
The court also sought detailed information on the process of nomination, selection and finalization of candidates, as well as preparations for the vote.
The writ petition was filed by BM Fahmida Alam, candidate for the post of Secretary for Liberation War and Democratic Movement from the left alliance-nominated panel, challenging the validity of GS candidate SM Farhad, who was nominated by the United Students' Alliance supported by Chhatrashibir. The High Court issued the postponement order during the hearing of this petition today.
According to the final list published on August 26, a total of 471 candidates were in the race for 28 positions, including 45 for Vice-President, 19 for General Secretary, 25 for Assistant General Secretary, and 217 for membership posts.
During the hearing, lawyer Shishir Monir represented Dhaka University, while Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua appeared for the petitioners.
