Hearing on DUCSU election in Appellate Division today
The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division has extended the stay on the High Court order that postponed the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election. The application filed by Dhaka University authorities has been scheduled for hearing on Wednesday in the regular bench of the Appellate Division.
Earlier, Justice Farah Mahbub of the Chamber Court issued the order on Tuesday.
Dhaka University’s lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Monir, said the stay on the High Court order will remain in effect. He added that the application will be listed as the first item for hearing in the full bench of the Appellate Division today.
Earlier on Monday, the High Court ordered the postponement of the DUCSU election until October 30. On the same day, the Chamber Court stayed that order.
On August 28, BM Fahmida Alam, a candidate for Liberation War and Democratic Movement Secretary from the leftist-backed “Aparajeyo 71-Adommo 24” panel, filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the candidacy of SM Farhad.
As per the announced schedule, the DUCSU election was set to be held on September 9.
A total of 471 candidates were contesting for 28 posts in the DUCSU polls, including 62 women. The member posts had the highest number of contestants, with 217 candidates. In the 18 residential halls of Dhaka University, 1,035 candidates were competing for 13 hall-level posts.
