Heatwave persists in 34 districts including Dhaka
A mild heatwave continued to sweep across 34 districts, including the capital Dhaka, on Monday (June 1), with weather officials warning that high humidity levels could make conditions feel even more uncomfortable despite limited chances of rainfall.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), temperatures in Dhaka are expected to remain nearly unchanged throughout the day. The combination of heat and elevated moisture in the air is likely to intensify discomfort for residents.
In its forecast for the six hours from 7:00am, the BMD said the capital may experience partly cloudy skies until noon. However, weather conditions are expected to remain largely dry.
Dhaka recorded a temperature of 28.6 degrees Celsius at 6:00am, while the maximum temperature on Sunday reached 36.4 degrees Celsius. Humidity stood at 86 per cent in the morning, with south to southwesterly winds likely to blow at speeds of 10 to 15 kilometres per hour.
The weather office said rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds may occur at a few places in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at isolated locations in Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions by this evening.
Meanwhile, the ongoing mild heatwave is expected to persist over Dhaka, Tangail, Narsingdi, Mymensingh, Chandpur, Lakshmipur, Brahmanbaria and Patuakhali districts, as well as parts of Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna divisions.
Meteorologists said the likelihood of widespread rainfall remains low, meaning hot and humid conditions are expected to continue across much of the country in the coming days.
