Heavy rain forecast in various parts of the country under low pressure impact
The Meteorological Department has forecast rain and thundershowers in various parts of the country under the influence of a monsoon low-pressure system. Moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at some places. Day temperatures across the country may drop by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius due to the rain.
In the forecast valid until 6pm on Tuesday, August 18, the Met Office said the low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas has intensified into a monsoon depression. It may move further northwestward. Rainfall activity may increase across the country under its influence.
According to the forecast, rain is likely in most places of Khulna, Barishal, Rajshahi, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are also likely in many areas of Rangpur, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.
Meanwhile, the sky over Dhaka and its adjoining areas may remain partly cloudy to temporarily overcast, with light to moderate rain possible. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected at some places due to the depression.
The Met Office said the axis of the monsoon trough extends through Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, the centre of the monsoon depression and the southern part of Bangladesh to Assam. The monsoon is active over Bangladesh and strong over the North Bay.
While day temperatures may drop slightly due to rainfall, no significant change in night temperatures is expected. Gusty winds and lightning may accompany the rain in various places, the Met Office said.
