Heavy rain shifts Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar's funeral prayer venue
The funeral prayer of former former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, former Acting President, Language Movement veteran and BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar will no longer be held at the Supreme Court premises due to incessant rainfall. Instead, his Namaz-e-Janaza will be offered after Zuhr prayers on Sunday at Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, according to a revised schedule.
Attorney General Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kazal confirmed the change on Sunday morning (July 12), saying the decision was made with the consent of the late leader's son, Barrister Naushad Jamir, in view of the adverse weather conditions.
The original programme included funeral prayers at Takwa Mosque, the Supreme Court premises, and in front of the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament). However, the Supreme Court ceremony has been cancelled because of the continuous downpour.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has announced that judicial proceedings in both the Appellate Division and the High Court Division will remain suspended during the second half of Sunday in honour of the late statesman. Proceedings of the Appellate Division's Chamber Judge Court have also been cancelled, according to an official notice signed by Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md. Shafiqul Islam.
Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar passed away early Sunday while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka's Shyamoli area. He was 94.
Born on December 1, 1931, in Nayabari village of Tetulia, Panchagarh, Jamiruddin Sircar was one of Bangladesh's most distinguished political and constitutional figures. During his long public career, he served as Speaker of Parliament twice, Acting President on two occasions, and earned wide recognition as one of the country's leading constitutional lawyers.
