High Court disposes of another 7,565 long-pending cases in a single day

As part of an ongoing special initiative to reduce the case backlog and ensure faster justice, the High Court Division disposed of 7,565 long-pending criminal miscellaneous cases in a single day.

According to a press release issued on Thursday by Md. Shafiqul Islam, Public Relations Officer of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, the total number of old criminal miscellaneous cases disposed of under the special programme has now reached 43,357 over 10 working days.

Including old writ petitions and other cases, the High Court has disposed of a total of 50,264 cases since the initiative began.

The statement said that 14 Criminal Motion Benches of the High Court jointly disposed of the 7,565 cases during Thursday's proceedings.

The special programme was launched on 7 May under the direction of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury. Since then, the High Court's Criminal Motion Benches and Writ Motion Benches have dedicated one working day each week to clearing long-pending cases.

According to the Supreme Court, the initiative aims to speed up access to justice, reduce the longstanding backlog of cases, and improve the overall efficiency of the judicial system.

The High Court has been consistently disposing of large numbers of old cases over the past several months.

Previously, on July 23, 10 Criminal Motion Benches set a one-day record by disposing of 7,853 old criminal miscellaneous cases. The Supreme Court said the special programme to clear pending cases will continue in the coming weeks.
