HC rejects writ against notification banning Awami League

The High Court has rejected a writ petition challenging the legality of a government notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations.

A bench of Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan dismissed the petition on Sunday (September 13), saying it had not been properly raised before the court.

The writ was filed by Md Al Amin, a resident of Sreenagar in Munshiganj, challenging a notification issued by the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry on May 12, 2025.

The notification banned all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations until the completion of trials against their leaders and activists at the International Crimes Tribunal. It also prohibited publications and publicity through the media, online platforms and social media, as well as rallies, meetings, gatherings and conferences.

Al Amin’s petition sought a rule declaring the notification unlawful and beyond the government’s legal authority. He also sought a stay on its implementation until disposal of the rule.

After hearing the petition, the High Court dismissed it as not pressed, effectively leaving the government notification in force.
