Highest 1,097 dengue patients hospitalized in a day, three die

The Directorate General of Health Services has reported that dengue infections are rising steadily across the country. In the past 24 hours, 1,097 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals, the highest single-day figure this year. Three more people died of dengue during the same period.

The information was disclosed in the regular dengue bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services on Sunday (August 30). With the three new deaths, the total number of dengue fatalities this year has risen to 93. Of these, 39 deaths occurred in August alone. Thirty-six people died in July, 13 in June and one in May. Two dengue patients each died in January and February.

The Directorate General of Health Services said that between 8am on Saturday and 8am on Sunday, 1,097 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country. This has taken the total number of dengue patients receiving hospital treatment this year to 34,683.

Meanwhile, 793 patients were discharged from hospitals after completing treatment in the past day. Altogether, 32,188 people have recovered from dengue and returned home this year.

Among the new patients, the highest number of admissions was recorded in Dhaka division, where 459 dengue patients were hospitalized in the past 24 hours. Khulna division followed with 243 new patients. Barishal recorded 123, Chattogram 116, Mymensingh 81 and Rajshahi division 76 hospital admissions.

The rising infection rate along with the increasing number of dengue deaths has created concern over the situation. According to the regular statistics of the Directorate General of Health Services, August has so far recorded the highest number of deaths this year. Concerned authorities are emphasizing effective measures to control the mosquito-borne disease in order to reduce new detections and hospital admissions.
