The new moon of the holy month of Safar 1448 Hijri has been sighted in Bangladesh's sky, and the month will begin from Thursday, July 16. Accordingly, the holy Akheri Chahar Somba will be observed on Wednesday, August 12.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held at the Baitul Mukarram conference room of the Islamic Foundation on Wednesday evening, July 15. The meeting was chaired by Md Munsi Alauddin Al Azad, Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The Islamic Foundation confirmed that the committee verified the sighting of the Safar moon based on information received from district administrations, Islamic Foundation offices, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and SPARRSO.
In Islamic tradition, Akheri Chahar Somba (the last Wednesday of the month of Safar) is observed with religious significance by Muslims worldwide. According to tradition, this day marks when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) temporarily recovered from illness and offered thanks to Allah.
