Home Adviser urges legal action against DU, JU ‘mob justice’
Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury described the beating deaths of a man at Dhaka University on suspicion of theft and a former Chhtra League leader at Jahangirnagar University. as “regrettable”.
“If someone commits a crime, turn them over to the law. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” Jahangir said after a meeting at the headquarters of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Thursday.
Speaking about such recent instances of “mob justice,” the adviser reiterated that no one should take the law into their own hands.
Tofazzal Hossain, 32, was beaten to death in front of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall at DU on suspicion of theft around midnight on Wednesday.
On the other hand, a former organizational secretary of the Chhatra League’s JU unit, Shamim Ahmed, was subjected to a mob beating the same day. Doctors declared him dead when he was brought to the hospital.
