Home Minister, opposition leader exchange heated talks in parliament
A heated exchange occurred in the National Parliament on Thursday (April 2) between Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed over the use of the term “false” in parliamentary proceedings.
During the seventh sitting of the 13th Parliament, Dr. Rahman, raising a point of order, accused the Home Minister of misrepresenting facts in his previous day’s statement, saying, “He has a remarkable skill to turn truth into falsehood and falsehood into truth.”
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram intervened, noting that points of order should relate to ongoing issues and that the matter had been discussed the previous day.
With the Speaker’s permission, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed responded, objecting to the term “false” as unparliamentary and requesting its removal from the official proceedings.
He clarified that his earlier remarks referred to a statement presented in Parliament under procedural rules, which he considered inaccurate.
Dr. Rahman later defended his comment, saying the confusion arose from a similar proposal submitted under a different name, and insisted he had not provided any incorrect information.
The incident highlighted the sharp exchanges between government and opposition members over parliamentary decorum and procedural interpretations.
