Human rights groups urge Bangladesh to release Shahriar Kabir
Several European and global human rights organizations have called on the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to ensure the release and adequate medical care of 75-year-old journalist, writer, and freedom fighter Shahriar Kabir.
According to the statement, Kabir’s health has deteriorated due to serious illness, leaving him at significant risk. His prolonged health issues have reportedly caused rapid weight loss and mobility challenges.
The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, an international human rights organization, described his detention as a violation of Bangladesh’s international legal obligations in a statement released on January 5, 2026. The institute also recommended his immediate release and appropriate compensation.
In a joint statement, the organizations outlined three key demands to the Bangladeshi government: the immediate release of all elderly and vulnerable prisoners, including Shahriar Kabir; provision of urgent medical care; and strict adherence to international human rights and humanitarian standards across all prisons.
Signatories to the appeal include the South Asia Democratic Forum, European Bangladesh Forum, Watch Group Bangladesh, Earth Civilization Network, and the Global Platform for Freedom and Justice Alliance, among other international civil society groups.
