‘I am Bangladeshi’, foreign state minister on British citizenship question

Humayun Kabir, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, has given a strong reaction to the question of renouncing United Kingdom citizenship. He said he is Bangladeshi and has come to the country only to work for Bangladesh.

He said these words in reply to questions from journalists at the Foreign Ministry on Monday (August 24).

When asked whether there is any legal barrier to accepting a ministry if one has dual citizenship and about the criticism on social media in this regard, Humayun Kabir said, “I am Bangladeshi. Coming here and working for Bangladesh means this. No privileged person will work here.”

Earlier when the context of a news published in a media outlet about his United Kingdom citizenship was raised, he expressed anger. At this time the foreign state minister also commented on the purpose behind raising questions about that news.

He said, “Why is he feeling the burn? Is his burn of 2008 rising again? Is the burn of Moin-Moinuddin, Fakhruddin rising in him again? Or what.”

Addressing the journalists Humayun Kabir further said, “All the people who take a strong position in favour of the country, the patriotic people who are there, the media and political leaders, now all of us together InshaAllah will take this country forward.”
