I do not see Indians and Bangladeshis as separate people: Dinesh Trivedi
India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, said that he does not view the people of India and Bangladesh as separate, emphasising the need for deeper connectivity and cooperation between the two neighbours.
Speaking to reporters after entering Bangladesh through the Benapole land port immigration checkpost on Friday (June 12), Trivedi stressed that the two countries share historical, cultural and human ties that should be further strengthened.
“We share the same sky and the same air. We want to move forward together,” he said before leaving for Dhaka following immigration and protocol formalities.
Responding to a question about the possibility of resuming or expanding tourism visas, the envoy said closer people-to-people relations would benefit both nations and contribute to stronger bilateral ties.
Trivedi also said that two strong democracies working together could become a significant economic and regional force, adding that greater interaction and cooperation between citizens of both countries was essential.
On allegations of cross-border push-ins involving undocumented migrants, he said democratic states inevitably face various challenges, but such issues can be addressed through dialogue and cooperation.
The new envoy identified sports, healthcare, technology and education as key areas for future collaboration between Bangladesh and India.
“If Bangladesh and India work together, they can present a powerful example to the world,” he said.
Trivedi has succeeded Pranay Verma as India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka. Verma has been appointed India’s ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
