I expect the tribunal to award maximum punishment to Sheikh Hasina-Kamal: Tajul
Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam has expected the International Crimes Tribunal to give maximum punishment to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in the crimes against humanity case.
He said this in response to questions from journalists at a press briefing on Thursday (November 13) afternoon in the context of the date of the verdict in Sheikh Hasina's case.
Tajul Islam said: "We had promised that whoever in Bangladesh, no matter how powerful, commits a crime, a crime against humanity, they will be brought to justice in a proper manner."
He further said: "Now on November 17, the court will exercise its good judgment, its wisdom, and they will give justice to the nation through a correct verdict. We expect this verdict to be an example for the future of Bangladesh."
He said: "We have prayed to the court for the maximum punishment. The court will exercise its discretion and our prayer is that the accused be given the maximum punishment for this crime."
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1 headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder on Thursday fixed November 17 for the verdict in the case.
Apart from Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is an accused in the case. Among them, Mamun confessed his guilt and gave a statement as a state witness. He was produced before the tribunal on Thursday.
