I supported July uprising: Kalimullah

A Dhaka court has ordered Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University (BRUR), to be sent to jail after showing him arrested in an attempted murder case linked to the July Movement.

During the hearing, Kalimullah told the court that he had supported the movement.

On Thursday, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Zakir Hossain approved the police application to show him arrested and ordered his transfer to jail.

Speaking from the dock after receiving permission from the court, Kalimullah said, "I supported the July Movement. Abu Sayeed was my student, and I was the first to protest his killing. I helped build public opinion after his death. I never opposed the movement."

Kalimullah was previously arrested on August 7 last year in an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case over alleged embezzlement of development funds at Begum Rokeya University.

On June 14, he was granted bail by the High Court on the condition that he submit a Tk 100,000 bond and surrender his passport.

As there were no other pending cases at the time, the process for his release from prison had begun.

However, before his release, police sought permission to show him arrested in the attempted murder case filed with Uttara West Police Station.

According to the case statement, during the July Movement on July 19, 2024, Mustain Billah Sabbir was shot in the left arm when attackers allegedly opened fire on protesters in the Rabindra Sarani area of Uttara.

He was first treated at Uttara High Care General Hospital and later transferred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).

The victim filed the attempted murder case with Uttara West Police Station on October 4, 2025.
