Identities of 8 July uprising martyrs confirmed

The identities of eight people martyred during the July 2024 mass uprising have been confirmed, according to the Criminal Investigation Department. Their identities were detected by forensic, DNA and medical forensic teams.

On Monday, January 5, exhumation and identification work began at the cemetery beside the Rayerbazar Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mohammadpur, where unidentified victims of the July uprising were buried.

A total of 114 bodies will be exhumed as part of the identification process.

Those identified are Faisal Sarkar, Parvez Bepari, Rafiqul Islam, 52, Mahim, Sohel Rana, Asanullah, Kabil Hossain and Rafiqul Islam, 29.

The CID said several unidentified bodies of men and women killed in different parts of Dhaka during the uprising were buried at the Rayerbazar cemetery. Following a state decision, steps were taken to determine their identities.

Under a decision of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, overall supervision and management of the process was assigned to the CID. After applications from Mohammadpur police station and the investigating officer, the court granted permission to exhume the bodies in the presence of an executive magistrate. Court orders approved the exhumation, post-mortem examinations and DNA sampling of all 114 bodies.
