Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the BNP, has pledged that if the party wins the next national election and forms the government, permanent honourariums will be provided to imams and khutbah deliverers.

Speaking as the chief guest at the national imam-khateeb conference at the China–Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre on Sunday, November 23, Tarique Rahman addressed the gathering virtually from London.

He said religious scholars are agents of social reform and that the BNP seeks the support of imams and khateebs for the forthcoming election.

Tarique added that sustainable development cannot be achieved without including the scholars, and the BNP has always opposed anti-Islamic activities. He said the party has never compromised on the core tenets of Islam.

Addressing the imams and khateebs, he said the forthcoming election is crucial for the defence of the nation’s independence and called for unity.

Speakers at the national conference included Jamaat-e-Islami amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Islamic movement leader and Chera-monai pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, and prominent preacher Shaykh Ahmadullah.
