ILO Director-General Gilbert F Houngbo arrives in Dhaka on 2-day visit

International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert F Houngbo has arrived in Dhaka on a two-day official visit.

He reached the capital on Sunday morning, July 19, according to a press release from the Ministry of Labour and Employment .

During the visit, he is scheduled to hold a courtesy meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment today. He is also expected to meet the Prime Minister on Monday .

Sources indicate that discussions during the visit are likely to cover a range of labour-related issues, including labour standards development, improvements in the working environment, labour rights, social security, skill development, and the labour market .

Issues concerning the ready-made garment sector, the informal labour market, and the implementation of international labour standards are expected to feature prominently in the discussions .

Gilbert F Houngbo is a citizen of Togo in West Africa. He assumed office as the 11th Director-General of the ILO in October 2022 and is the first African to hold this position in the organisation's century-long history .
