Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assured the National Parliament on Thursday (April 2) that the 2012 disappearance of BNP leader Ilias Ali will not go “unpunished,” as MPs raised concerns over the unresolved case.

Ilias Ali, a prominent young politician, went missing from the capital's Banani, on the night of April 17, 2012. His wife and MP, Tahsina Rushdi Luna, may submit a written notice to the Home Minister to seek action.

Speaker Ahmad said, “Ilias Ali was a dearly loved family member and a rising political leader. His case will be properly investigated, and justice will be ensured.”

Earlier, ruling party Whip Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu alleged in Parliament that Ali was killed, held at RAB-1 headquarters, and later dumped in the Dhaleshwari River, calling it an international crime against humanity.

He added that Ali’s wife had met then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had assured the family of Ali’s safe return, a promise that was never fulfilled.

The Speaker described the matter as both “critical and heartbreaking,” noting that references from international tribunals could guide proper action.

He emphasized that Ali’s disappearance is not merely a political issue, but a serious matter of human rights and international law.
