Immediate action against dilapidated buses during Eid: DMP Commissioner
Immediate action will be taken if any dilapidated buses are operated during Eid, said DMP Commissioner (Acting) Md Sarwar. He stated that operating dilapidated buses on the roads during Eid is completely prohibited.
He made these remarks as a special guest while speaking at a views-exchange meeting titled 'Ensuring hassle-free and extortion-free Eid journey: Owners-Labourers Views-exchange' at the capital's main bus terminal on Saturday, March 14.
The DMP Commissioner said passengers must not be carried on bus roofs, over-speeding must be avoided, and vehicles must not be driven by unfit drivers. Help desks will be set up at bus terminals displaying fare lists and schedules. If complaints of fare overcharging, ticket black-marketing or passenger harassment are received, immediate action will be taken.
He informed that 800 to 900 additional traffic police will be deployed at bus terminals, launch ghats and railway stations to strengthen security. Additionally, plainclothes police, DB, Counter-Terrorism Unit, SWAT teams and dog squads will be on duty. Magistrate teams will also be present to enforce the law and ensure proper traffic management.
The DMP Commissioner further said the government has declared an additional holiday on March 18, which will distribute passenger pressure over several days. From March 16 to 20, approximately 15 to 20 lakh people may leave Dhaka daily. The number of passengers entering Dhaka during Eid will be 20 to 25 lakh. Plans have been made in coordination with transport owners and workers to manage this pressure.
He also informed that the movement of trucks, lorries and covered vans on highways will be restricted to ensure hassle-free Eid journeys. Unnecessary goods-laden trucks from Chattogram port will not be allowed on the highways.
Md Sarwar said police, transport owners and workers, and all concerned agencies must work in coordination. The main goal is to ensure safe and hassle-free journeys for passengers.
Member of Parliament Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas was present as the chief guest at the meeting.
