Abu Hossain, the elder brother of July-August mass uprising's first martyr Abu Sayed, has called for the immediate execution of the court verdict in his brother's murder case, while urging the government to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation for the families of those killed and injured during the movement.

Speaking as a representative of the martyrs' families at the 'July National Conference 2026' in Dhaka's Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center on Saturday (July 4), Abu Hossain said justice for all victims of the July-August uprising must be completed without further delay.

He recalled that his younger brother, Abu Sayed, a talented English department student at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, was shot dead during the protests, an incident that was witnessed by people across Bangladesh and abroad.

"The sacrifice of Abu Sayeed inspired countless people to take to the streets against the authoritarian government," he said, adding that the uprising ultimately led to the fall of the regime after months of public resistance.

Addressing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Abu Hossain urged the government to prioritize rehabilitation for families who lost their sole breadwinners and for those permanently disabled after losing limbs or eyesight during the movement.

"My brother's murder case has reached a verdict. Now we want to see that verdict implemented as quickly as possible," he said. "As the second anniversary of the mass uprising approaches on August 5, we expect all cases involving the killing of July martyrs to be concluded and their verdicts enforced swiftly."

He also stressed the importance of preserving the legacy of the July uprising, expressing concern over recent arson attacks targeting July memorials in different parts of the country.

"These memorials should be protected and preserved by the state so future generations can learn about the sacrifices made during the July movement," he said.

Highlighting regional development issues, Abu Hossain also called for the establishment of an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in northern Bangladesh, expanded employment opportunities, and special incentives to promote overseas employment and boost remittance inflows through the development of skilled manpower.
