Income tax returns can be filed year-round: NBR Chairman
From the upcoming fiscal year, taxpayers in Bangladesh will be able to file income tax returns online throughout the year, without waiting for the designated filing period, Md. Abdur Rahman Khan announced during a pre-budget discussion with stakeholders on Tuesday (March 31).
Currently, taxpayers are required to submit returns between June and November. However, the government plans to keep the process open year-round starting next fiscal year.
The NBR Chairman said that while year-round filing will be allowed, special incentives will be offered to those who submit their returns within the designated period.
Taxpayers who file on time will not have to pay the additional 2% interest on due taxes, and investment-related tax rebates or incentives will remain in place. Early filers will also receive priority service.
He added, “This year, the target for tax collection is expected to surpass all previous records.
“Tax exemptions are currently very high, which reduces revenue. In the 2026-27 budget, exemptions will be reduced.”
The chairman emphasized that the tax rate will not be increased; rather, coverage will be broadened. Measures are being taken to stop tax leakage, encourage honest officials, and strengthen intelligence operations to identify tax evaders.
