The primary duty of journalists is to hold those in power accountable by questioning them, and this role must continue, said Information and Broadcasting Minister Jahir Uddin Swapon.

He made the remarks at an event marking the fifth founding anniversary of the Journalists' Protection and Welfare Foundation on Wednesday (August 19).

The Information Minister said there is no alternative to independent journalism in a democratic society. The duty of journalists is to uphold the truth and ask questions to ensure accountability of power. Therefore, this fundamental role of journalism should never be halted.

He said the country's media are currently working in a freer environment than at any time in the past. He also claimed that the current government has not imposed any restrictions on the practice of independent journalism.

Jahir Uddin Swapon said alongside press freedom, it is essential to ensure professional responsibility. Everyone must remain vigilant against those who engage in unethical journalism under the guise of journalism. He stressed the need to practice responsible journalism to maintain public trust in the media.

Alleging that fascist forces were aided under the guise of journalism in the past, the Information Minister said the government has brought those involved in such activities to justice. He also said the government is working to create a new and effective environment for the media.
