India’s new High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi presents credentials to President
India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, formally assumed his diplomatic responsibilities on Thursday (June 25) after presenting his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban.
The credential ceremony marks the official beginning of Trivedi’s tenure as the 16th Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
Trivedi was appointed to the position by the Indian government in April and arrived in Bangladesh on June 5 through the Benapole land port to take up his new assignment.
Ahead of his assumption of office, New Delhi granted Trivedi special protocol status equivalent to that of a Union Cabinet Minister during his tenure in Dhaka.
According to an official notification issued on June 24, the designation will apply solely to ceremonial and official protocol matters and does not alter India’s permanent order of precedence.
Diplomatic observers see Trivedi’s appointment as an important development in Bangladesh-India relations at a time when both countries are seeking to expand cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy, and people-to-people exchanges.
Officials familiar with the matter said the new envoy is expected to focus on advancing key bilateral initiatives and strengthening institutional engagement between Dhaka and New Delhi. His arrival also coincides with recent efforts to ease travel procedures, including the resumption of tourist visa services for Bangladeshi nationals, a move widely seen as a positive signal for bilateral ties.
Analysts believe Trivedi’s tenure could play a crucial role in deepening cooperation across strategic and economic sectors while helping both countries navigate emerging regional and global challenges.
