India's SpiceJet banned from Bangladesh airspace
Bangladesh has banned Indian budget airline SpiceJet from using its airspace for non-payment of outstanding navigation charges. NDTV and PTI reported the matter.
The report said that Bangladesh's decision has put the company in trouble. Flights from Kolkata to Guwahati and Imphal in northeastern India are now taking a long detour to their destinations, avoiding Bangladesh's airspace.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh said that SpiceJet owes a large amount of money for airspace usage fees. The ban on using the airspace was imposed after it failed to pay the arrears despite long-standing demands.
According to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, SpiceJet flights have been using alternative routes avoiding Bangladesh's airspace since Thursday.
A spokesperson for the company said that discussions are underway with Bangladeshi authorities to resolve the issue. In a statement, SpiceJet said that this is a regular business process and efforts are being made to resolve the issue quickly through constructive discussions.
SpiceJet's share price fell on the stock market after the news was released.
