Info minister seeks UNESCO support for roadmap to tackle misinformation

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has called for a comprehensive roadmap with technical support from UNESCO to combat misinformation and disinformation.

He made the call during a meeting with UNESCO Representative in Bangladesh Dr Susan Vize at the Secretariat on Wednesday (April 22).

During the meeting, Dr Vize outlined UNESCO’s ongoing activities in Bangladesh, highlighting efforts to strengthen fact-checking initiatives.

She noted that training programmes are being conducted for university students to enhance their capacity in verifying information.

She also briefed the minister on UNESCO’s role in supporting media policy development and ensuring information integrity.

Welcoming the initiatives, the minister stressed the importance of maintaining transparency in the digital age and underscored the scope for enhanced collaboration between Bangladesh and UNESCO in the media sector.

He urged leveraging UNESCO’s global expertise to build a robust information protection framework in Bangladesh.

The UNESCO representative assured full cooperation in this regard.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury and Secretary Mahbuba Farzana were also present at the meeting.
