Today, October 11, is the International Day of the Girl Child. The day is being observed worldwide with the aim of establishing the rights of girl children, eliminating discrimination and ensuring safe and equal opportunities for them.

This year's theme is "Stop Child Marriage, Invest in Girls' Rights". Ensuring girl children's education, health, safety and the right to freely determine their own future has received special importance this time.

Since 2012, following a United Nations General Assembly declaration, the International Day of the Girl Child has been observed every year on October 11. There are nearly 110 crore girl children in the world, whose talent, creativity and leadership can play an important role in changing society. However, due to various social and economic barriers, many girls are still deprived of the opportunity to develop their potential. The main purpose of the day is to highlight these obstacles and increase effective initiatives for the rights and empowerment of girl children.

Major obstacles to the progress of girl children worldwide include child marriage, poverty, limited access to education, malnutrition, gender discrimination and various forms of violence. According to UN data, one in every five girls in the world is married before turning 18. Child marriage causes many girls to drop out of education, increases health risks and narrows their freedom to make decisions about their own lives. These risks can increase further in situations such as conflict, displacement and natural disasters.

This year's day emphasises preventing child marriage, as well as keeping girl children in education, ensuring healthcare and nutrition, and protection from violence. According to experts and development workers, child marriage can be reduced if girls are kept in school, families are given financial and social support, and initiatives are taken to change discriminatory attitudes. In this regard, alongside proper enforcement of the law, raising awareness at the family and local levels is also urgent.

Establishing the rights of girl children requires the coordinated role of family, educational institutions, society and the state. Giving importance to girls' opinions, creating opportunities for them to participate in decision-making and ensuring equal rights in education and careers are the demands of the time. Effective steps must be taken so that no child's future is limited by their gender, financial condition or social identity.

If girl children's safe childhood, quality education and dignified life can be ensured, they will be able to fulfil their dreams as well as make an important contribution to the country's development. Therefore, the call is being made to take continuous initiatives to stop child marriage, prevent violence and protect girls' rights, rather than being limited to observing the day. Let the pledge of this day be to build equal opportunities and a safe future for every girl child.
