Interpol Red Notice sought to bring back ex-army chief Aziz Ahmed
Authorities have sought an Interpol Red Notice against former Bangladesh Army chief General Aziz Ahmed to facilitate his arrest and return to Bangladesh, Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said.
A formal application has been submitted to the relevant authorities, requesting necessary steps to issue the Red Notice against Aziz in line with the rules and procedures of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), Aminul Islam confirmed to the media on Tuesday (August 18).
The letter, signed by the chief prosecutor, also asked the authorities to provide updates on the progress of the application and inform the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal if further action is required.
Copies of the letter were sent to the Inspector General of Police and the Additional Inspector General of Police (NCB) at Bangladesh Police Headquarters.
The move comes as authorities seek to bring Aziz, a former army chief, back to Bangladesh through international law-enforcement cooperation.
A Red Notice is an international request to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition or other legal proceedings; it is not itself an international arrest warrant.
