Inu, Dipu Moni, Latif Siddique among 11 produced before tribunal

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Hasanul Haq Inu and 10 other accused have been produced before the International Crimes Tribunal-2 in a case over alleged killings during the May 2013 Shapla Chattar violence in Dhaka.

The 11 accused were brought to the tribunal from jail in prison vans under tight security on Thursday morning (September 3).

A three-member tribunal headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury is scheduled to hear the case.

The other accused produced before the tribunal are former state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, former food minister Dr Abdur Razzaque, former minister Dipu Moni, former minister Abdul Latif Siddique, former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Haque, retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal, Shahriar Kabir, president of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Ekattor TV Managing Director Mozammel Haque Babu, and journalist Farzana Rupa.

The tribunal had initially scheduled their production for August 16. The prosecution later sought more time as production warrants had not been issued for two accused and non-execution reports on arrest warrants were pending.

On July 27, Tribunal-2 took cognisance of formal charges brought by the prosecution against 41 accused. It also issued arrest warrants against those absconding and ordered that detained accused be produced before the tribunal.

The case contains two charges. The first concerns the alleged killing of 32 people at Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013. The second relates to alleged killings, including 20 people in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, and other parts of the country on May 6.

Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 30 other accused are among those absconding in the case. The tribunal has issued arrest warrants against them.
