Investigation report of Sagar-Runi murder postponed 130 times

The deadline for submitting the investigation report of the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi has been postponed once again even after the formation of a high-level task force committee.

The date was postponed again on Wednesday as the investigation officer of the case could not submit the report.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam fixed the next day for submitting the report as November 5. With this, the day for submitting the report has been postponed 130 times.

Journalist couple Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed on February 11, 2012 during the tenure of the ousted Awami League government. In this incident, brother of the deceased Runi, Nowsher Alam Roman, filed a murder case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The accused of this case are Rafiqul Islam, Bokul Mia, Masum Mintu, Kamrul Islam alias Arun, Abu Sayeed, two security guards of Sagar-Runi’s house Palash Rudra Paul and Enayet Ahmed, and their ‘friend’ Tanvir Rahman Khan. Among them, Tanvir is on bail. Palash Rudra Paul has absconded after going on bail. The other accused are in jail.

Initially, a sub-inspector (SI) of that police station was the investigation officer of the case. Four days after the incident, the investigation responsibility of this sensational murder case was transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police. After investigating for more than two months, the DB failed to uncover the mystery. Later, on the direction of the High Court, the investigation responsibility of the murder case was transferred to RAB on April 18 of the same year.
