Involvement of one person found in Sagar-Runi murder case: Chief Prosecutor

The investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi has found the involvement of one person from the cultural sphere, International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said on Sunday, August 30. However, he did not disclose the individual's identity.

Speaking to journalists at his office on the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the chief prosecutor said the tribunal's investigation agency accidentally came across the important clue while reviewing CDR (call detail records) in another case.

"Just as we found some clues regarding former Major Mozaffar Hossain in the murder of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, similarly we have found clues in the Sagar-Runi case. I cannot reveal the identity now," he said.

"However, I can say that a cultural personality has been linked to the Sagar-Runi case. We are verifying and examining those links. We are keeping watch on that person. If further investigation yields more authentic information, it will be shared with the PBI officials concerned," he added.

He said this is an individual murder case and will be tried in the relevant Sessions Court.

Sagar Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and his wife Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed in their rented flat in West Rajabazar on the night of February 11, 2012, during the deposed Awami League government's tenure. Runi's brother Nawshir Alam Roman filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, naming eight people.

The case has been investigated by DB, RAB and later a high-level task force committee. On August 27, the investigating officer failed to submit the probe report, leading Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam to set a new date of September 30. The case is currently being investigated by the PBI.
