Bangladesh is observing Jail Killing Day on November 3, commemorating the assassination of four national leaders inside Dhaka Central Jail in 1975, just four years after the country's independence. The killings remain one of the darkest and most tragic chapters in the nation's history.

The four leaders were Syed Nazrul Islam, acting president of the provisional government during the Liberation War; Tajuddin Ahmad, the wartime prime minister; Captain M Mansur Ali, a member of the cabinet; and AHM Qamaruzzaman. They played pivotal roles in leading the Liberation War and laying the foundations of the independent state.

During the 1971 Liberation War against Pakistani occupation forces, the four leaders took charge of running the country and organising the independence struggle after the formation of the Mujibnagar government. Their political acumen, leadership and organisational skills were instrumental in advancing the war.

Following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on August 15, 1975, the country's political landscape underwent a major transformation. Against this backdrop, the four national leaders were killed on November 3 while in detention at the central jail. Their assassination while in state custody remains an unprecedented and deeply disturbing episode in the country's history.

Every year, the day is observed with tributes to the four leaders. Various political parties, social and cultural organisations arrange discussions, memorial programmes and prayer gatherings to honour their contributions and highlight their role in securing Bangladesh's independence.

Jail Killing Day is not only a day of remembrance for the four leaders but also a reminder of the history of the Liberation War, the political turmoil that followed independence and the grave failure of state security. The day also renews calls to preserve their historical legacy by highlighting their contributions and sacrifices to younger generations.
