Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has clarified his position regarding recent reports on a purported meeting with Indian diplomats. He addressed the matter in a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday morning (January 1), following a Reuters interview.

In the post, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman explained that during the interview, a Reuters journalist asked whether Jamaat maintains any contact or holds meetings with India as a neighbouring country. He said he replied that after returning home from treatment following an illness last year, several domestic and foreign dignitaries, including two Indian diplomats, visited him at his residence, and he spoke with them as he did with others.

He added that during the discussion, the diplomats requested that the meeting not be publicised at that time. He emphasised that Jamaat had told them any future meetings concerning mutual interests of the two countries would be reported publicly. “There was nothing secret about it,” he wrote.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed surprise that some domestic media outlets portrayed the meeting as a “secret engagement” with India. He strongly condemned such reports and urged media to refrain from publishing misleading news without verifying facts.
