Jamaat Ameer lays wreath, offers prayers at Central Shaheed Minar first time
For the first time, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqul Rahman laid a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar in the early hours of International Mother Language Day, marking the first formal tribute by him and the party.
Alongside members of the 11-party alliance, he stood at the martyrs’ memorial offering prayers for the souls of the language martyrs.
The 11-party delegation, led by Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, arrived at the Shaheed Minar at 12:01am on Saturday (February 21), and the wreath was formally placed at 12:10am.
Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, MPs Hasnat and ATM Azhar, and other alliance leaders were present there.
After the tribute, the members observed a moment of silence and offered prayers at the memorial.
Earlier, at midnight, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid their respects. Subsequently, military chiefs—including Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman, Navy Chief Admiral Mohammed Nazmul Hasan, and Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan—also laid wreaths.
