Jamaat-e-Islami has described the detention of Thakurgaon Jamaat ameer Belal Uddin with nearly Tk 5 million as a staged drama by law enforcement agencies.

The allegation was made by Jamaat’s central assistant secretary general Ehsanul Mahbub Zobayer at an emergency press conference held at the party’s central office on Wednesday.

Zobayer said Belal Uddin is a businessman and questioned how such an incident could occur in a high-security area like an airport. He claimed the move was part of a deliberate attempt to defame Jamaat-e-Islami.

He further alleged that a group of miscreants was trying to disrupt the peaceful environment to prevent people from going to polling centres. He claimed polling booths were vandalised in the constituency of the party ameer the previous day and that Jamaat leaders and activists were facing attacks across the country.

He also accused certain law enforcement personnel of removing Jamaat polling agents under the guise of authority and carrying out assaults, alleging that a section of the administration was acting in favour of a particular party.
