A Jamaat leader named Maulana Habibur Rahman Helali was detained with Tk 200,000 in cash in Muradnagar of Cumilla.

He was detained on Wednesday afternoon from the Chaliakandi area after local residents intercepted him and later handed him over to police in the presence of an executive magistrate.

Habibur Rahman Helali is the chief coordinator of the Chaliakandi polling centre for Jamaat-nominated candidate Yusuf Hakim in the Cumilla-3 Muradnagar constituency.

According to locals, he arrived in the area from Dhamghar in a private vehicle around noon. As his movement appeared suspicious, the vehicle was searched. A shopping bag was recovered from the back of the vehicle, containing two bundles of Tk 1,000 notes wrapped inside a thin blanket.

After the matter was reported, an executive magistrate arrived at the scene with police and detained him.

Assistant returning officer and Muradnagar upazila nirbahi officer Abdur Rahman confirmed the matter to the media, saying the money was not seized while it was being distributed. He added that further legal action would be decided by a judicial magistrate.

Cumilla North district Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Professor Abdul Matin said he was not immediately aware of the incident and would provide details after enquiring.
