Jamaat MP pays tribute to Bangabandhu, Zia in parliament
A lawmaker from Jamaat-e-Islami paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the Jatiya Sangsad, describing him as one of the greatest hero of the country’s independence.
Speaking during the discussion on the President’s address on Thursday (April 23), Gaibandha-5 MP Md. Abdul Warech also remembered former president Ziaur Rahman, alongside Jamaat’s former leaders Ghulam Azam and Matiur Rahman Nizami.
“I am a freedom fighter. I respectfully remember Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, whom I consider the sole proclaimer of independence, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as a key leader of independence,” he said.
The MP also paid tribute to the veteran leader Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, recalling his role in the pre-independence movement, and honored those martyred in the Liberation War as well as in the July uprising.
The speech drew attention in the House, as it reflected a rare instance of a Jamaat lawmaker publicly acknowledging Bangabandhu’s role in the country’s independence narrative.
