Jamaat writes to Speaker, EC to take action against Gazi Nazrul
After a video of his personal moments went viral on social media, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled its Satkhira-4 constituency Member of Parliament, Gazi Nazrul Islam, on Wednesday. The party informed the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of its decision through letters on Thursday afternoon.
According to sources from the Speaker's office and the Election Commission (EC), the letters, signed by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, stated that an organisational investigation into the allegations published in various media recently proved the MP's moral lapse. Consequently, he was expelled under Article 62 of the party's constitution.
The letters stated that the decision was adopted unanimously at an emergency meeting of the party's central executive council on Wednesday, chaired by the Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman. The notification was submitted to the Speaker and the EC for their information and necessary action.
