Jatiya Party leaders back independent candidate Rumin Farhana in Brahmanbaria-2
Following the withdrawal of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) candidate in Brahmanbaria-2 (covering Sarail, Ashuganj, and part of Bijoynagar), local party leaders have extended their support to independent candidate Barrister Rumin Farhana.
The endorsement was announced Monday night (February 10) under the leadership of JaPa central Vice Chairman Abdul Hamid Vashani. Several hundred party activists gathered at Farhana’s main campaign office in Shahbazpur, Sarail, presenting flowers and pledging support for her *Haas* (duck) election symbol.
The move comes a day after JaPa’s candidate for the *Langol* (plough) symbol, Ziaul Haque Mridha, withdrew from the race citing campaign disruptions, threats to party activists, and security concerns.
Among those present during the endorsement were Sarail Upazila JaPa Convener Emdadul Haque, Secretary Mojahidul Islam, Ashuganj Upazila JaPa President Hanif Sarkar, General Secretary Shah Alam Sarkar, and leaders from 19 unions in the constituency.
Abdul Hamid Vashani said the decision was made under instructions from JaPa Secretary General Shamim Haider Patwari. “The local electorate feels safe with her, and we expect voters will voluntarily cast their ballots for the 'Haas' symbol,” he said.
Meanwhile, Farhana alleged that rival candidates were engaging in last-minute vote-buying, showing off muscle power, and intimidating her supporters.
Originally, nine candidates contested in Brahmanbaria-2, including two independents. Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mobarak Hossain withdrew in favour of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) nominee following party directives.
The election in the constituency is now set to be a direct contest between independent Rumin Farhana and BNP-led coalition nominee Maulana Junayed Al Habib, co-chairman of the Bangladesh Central Committee of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
