Detectives have arrested Mahabub Hossain Samir, the prime accused in the case over the brutal assault on teenager Ripon Rishi that allegedly left him blind.

Samir, an expelled leader of the Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), was arrested during a raid in Dhaka's Sadarghat area on Thursday (July 2).

Samir, son of the late Matiur Rahman of Deogaon in Savar Sadar Union, previously served as the general secretary of the Savar Thana unit of JCD. He was expelled from the organisation after the assault on Ripon Rishi sparked widespread public outrage.

Confirming the arrest, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Dhaka North Detective Branch (DB) Saidul Islam said Samir was apprehended in Sadarghat based on confidential information.

"He is the principal accused in the case filed over the attack on Ripon and also faces several other criminal cases at Savar Model Police Station," the OC said.

Police said Samir has been handed over to Savar Model Police Station after the completion of legal formalities for further proceedings.

The assault on Ripon Rishi, which allegedly resulted in the teenager losing his eyesight, triggered widespread condemnation in Savar. Following the incident, the victim's family filed a case with Savar Model Police Station, prompting a manhunt that ultimately led to Samir's arrest.
