Chatra Dal leaders and activists have bound a youth with an electric pole and beaten him in front of the main gate of Jagannath University (JnU) on the allegation of ‘association’ with the organizationally banned Awami League and banned Chhatra League. Later he was rescued and handed over to the police. Several rounds of clashes between two factions of Chatra Dal have occurred centring a post given on Facebook a few hours after this incident. This incident occurred at the main gate of the university and the surrounding area at noon on Sunday.

It is learnt from eyewitnesses and Chatra Dal sources that Chatra Dal leaders and activists were holding protest programmes by taking position at the main gate of the university, the courtyards of various faculties and around the campus from this morning in protest against the ‘lockdown’ programme of the banned organization Jubo League. Around 12pm while the sit-in programme was going on a youth was observing the activities of Chatra Dal sitting on a rickshaw. At one stage he suddenly chanted ‘Joy Bangla’ and tried to run away.

At this time Chatra Dal leaders and activists chased and caught him and brought him in front of the main gate of the campus. There he was beaten indiscriminately after being bound with an electric pole. Later after getting the news the police of Kotwali police station came and rescued him and took him away.

Chatra Dal claimed that the house of that arrested youth is in Barguna. He is involved with the politics of Chhatra League and evidence of various activities of the organization has been found in his mobile phone. However that person claimed himself as a rickshaw puller.

The youth who was the victim of the beating has been admitted to Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali police station Rabiul Islam said that ‘Chatra Dal arrested one person and handed him over to us. It seems he has been beaten after the arrest. He has been sent to Mitford Hospital for treatment. After he recovers his political identity and details will be known by interrogating him.’

During the programme convener of Jagannath University Chatra Dal Mehedi Hasan Himel said, ‘The position of Jagannath University Chatra Dal has always been clear against the misdeeds of the banned organization that we are seeing even after the student-people’s revolution.’
