JnU Chhatra Dal leader Sher Ali expelled over student assault

A day after allegations surfaced that he had attacked, beaten and threatened to kill a Jagannath University (JnU) student, his younger brother and fiancée, Sher Ali, a member of the university branch Chhatra Dal's convening committee, has been expelled from the organisation.

The expulsion was announced through a notification signed by central Chhatra Dal Office Secretary Md Jahangir Alam on Thursday (July 23). It stated that Sher Ali was removed from his organisational position on charges of breaching party discipline, with the approval of central Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.

Earlier, Hasan Al Abit (Sabayet), a student of the 2022-23 session of the university's Theatre Department, filed a written complaint with the university's Proctor.

In his complaint, he alleged that while he was on campus late at night with his younger brother, fiancée and a friend of his brother, Sher Ali, a student of the English Department, and Abid Hasan Badhon, a student of the Geography Department, arrived on a motorcycle and began beating his brother and friend without any provocation.

He further alleged that when he went to the scene after hearing the commotion, Sher Ali brought a wooden plank with nails from a nearby tea shop and beat him. At that time, he allegedly said, "I am Sher of Jagannath, I will kill you today."

The complaint also stated that during the attack, his fiancée was mentally harassed and an attempt was also made to assault her.

Following the incident, Sher Ali was expelled from the Chhatra Dal as an organisational measure based on the allegations.
